THE ORIGIN OF BIRTHSTONES
Birthstones weren’t always associated with the months of the year and some scholars trace their origins back to biblical times.
In the book Exodus in the Bible (28:17-20), it’s written that 12 gemstones were fixed on the breastplate of the prophet Aaron. The breastplate boasted 12 unique gemstones that represented the 12 tribes of Israel. It was a religious garment with specific symbolism regarding the tribes.
Over time certain gemstones also became associated with the 12 astrological signs the 12 months of the year. Then, in the early 1900’s the National Association of Jewelers made the 12 birthstones official – assigning a birthstone to a particular month.
There have been three separate lists of birthstones for each month: ancient (a list that has been widely recognised and used for thousands of year), traditional (a list that has been available for the past 500 years) and modern (available for the past 100 years). These lists have many gems that overlap, but some birthstones are often categorized according to colour instead of specific stones.
Today, birthstones are most often gifted on birthdays, holidays, anniversaries and many other occasions.
At Eden and Co® we have a Birthstone Collection that includes our Birthstone Necklace, Bezel Birthstone Ring and Delicate Birthstone Ring. Investing in a birthstone piece comes with meaning and a history that is thousands of years old.
